Make Your Own Shaker

A shaker is a percussion instrument that is played by shaking it. Inside the shaker are stones, beans or seeds that rattle as the instrument is shaken. Maracas  are a type of shaker that have a handle and are usually played in pairs.

Can you make your own shakers? Find a small pot or a jar with a secure lid. Put in a couple of spoonfuls of rice, dried beans, lentils. You could also try buttons or beans. Shake carefully. Do you like the sound? Experiment with different amounts and types of ‘filling’. When you are happy with the sound place the lid on firmly and wrap around with tape so that you are sure the lid can’t fall off.

Now make music with your new shaker. Try different rhythms or sing along as you play.
