Exams Overview

I like to enter pupils for graded music exams as this gives them a target to work towards, encourages practice and gives a feeling of achievement.

The examination board that I usually use is the Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music (ABRSM). I usually start entering pupils at Grade 1 (there are eight grades in total).

All grade exams have a similar structure, tailored to the standard that is being examined. Public exams are held three times a year – roughly November, March and June. The ABRSM introduced a new exam booking system at the beginning of 2020. This allows entrants to request specific dates, although not the time of day.

The exam board charges a fee for all exams. Violinists and cellists also need accompanying on the piano at the exam, which I do and for which I currently charge £16.

For child pupils I will let the parents know when I think your child is ready to start preparing for an exam – there is usually new music to be purchased. When the pupil is ready to be entered I will let you know, at which point I will be requesting the fees.

For adult pupils, when I think you are ready to start preparing for an exam then we will discuss it together, before buying music, working towards and then taking the exam.
